Most people aren’t packing their bags for a trip to Glendale in late September. But if you’re like us, you’re headed to the 2019 VHMA Annual Meeting and Conference, and you’re in for a treat. We put together a quick list of things to do to make the most out of this trip to the desert (in the hours you’re not learning, of course).

Stay cool, learn, and enjoy yourself!

Eat & Drink

Breakfast

6409 W Glendale Ave, Glendale, AZ 85301
6am – 3pm, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday

When you feel depresso, have a little espresso. And can you ever go wrong with a coffee stop that has ‘&’ in the name? A short drive away from the hotel, this cute coffee stop is a great destination if you’re looking to get some work done over breakfast. They also have fresh-made sandwiches, which really rounds out the experience, right?

18255 N 83rd Ave, Glendale, AZ 85308
7am – 2:30pm Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday

Want a home-town diner experience while traveling? Most people don’t, but maybe you do! Coming highly recommended from an Arizonan PetDesker (“Million Dollar Bacon!”) this place is worth the short trip up the 101. So grab a couple friends and get up here early to load up on delicious breakfast, brunch, or lunch.

8466 W Peoria Ave Ste 1, Peoria, AZ 85345
6am – 9pm Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday

Want a family style, deliciously greasy, classic meal? This place looks like where you should head. North of the convention center, this place has selections for breakfast and lunch that would make your grandfather’s mouth water. Head over there for a little bit of home town nostalgia, and a whole lot of delicious calories.

This twenty year old establishment is proud of its concept: “Rock Meets Western.” If you want a dining experience comprised of a pretty cool mechanical bull, a delicious and juicy steak, and the ambience of an Old Western saloon, plug this restaurant into your GPS. If that doesn’t sell your inner cowboy, then you probably don’t have an inner cowboy.

6770 N Sunrise Blvd suite 109, Glendale, AZ 85305
11am – 2am, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday

After a long day discussing the finer points of practice management, you should head over to the Lola AZ. Fresh and local food plus custom cocktails! I mean, they have a lovely cocktail in a hollowed out watermelon – sounds good for a hot day. For brunch, lunch, or dinner, The Lola is the perfect place to duck in for air conditioning and a fresh cocktail while the sun sets.

5713 W Glendale Ave, Glendale, AZ 85301
10:30 – 7:30 Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday

If you’re a burger and/or hotdog connoisseur, Moe’s Burgers should be on your list. Head into this historic, counter-serve burger joint and fill up on some juicy fast food with their acclaimed fries on the side. You’ll sleep like a rock.

Highly recommended martinis, plus good food, and raves about service on yelp? Sign me up after a long day of discussing the latest trends of veterinary hospital management! This may seem like a late night bar, but it’s really got a high quality kitchen. So come here with a couple friends and make a new memory debriefing with a martini and some appetizers of your choice.

8307 West Washington Street, Peoria, AZ, 85345

Are you a fan of craft liquor? Are you a fan of fire stations? Well, have we got the recommendation for you! Lucidi Distilling serves guests with samplings of their various liquors — and they have a lot. Plus, if you’re interested in the mechanics of distilling liquor — take their tour, they offer those too! If you love wine, you probably should not come here.

6751 N Sunset Blvd Suite E-206, Glendale, AZ 85305
Showtime: Friday 7pm

This is one of the better comedy clubs in the area. If you’re looking to get a good laugh after a fun and exhausting week of learning about veterinary hospitals — this is your spot. A quote from one of our Arizona Natives here at PetDesk: “Go for the laughs and a great time” You won’t want to miss this show!

4725 E Mayo Blvd., Phoenix, AZ 85050
Closed Wednesday; Open 9am – 5pm Thursday and Friday

One of the top rated attractions in the city, this museum is a treat for the musician, history buff, or just plain old museum lover. If you ever see an old instrument and think: “Now what does that sound like?” this place can help you answer. As you look at the old version of modern instruments, and instruments that look like nothing you ever see before, you can listen to them being played through headsets they provide. Neat!
